Batteries for Torpedo & Underwater Systems
Epsilor provides a range of batteries for high power underwater applications, including torpedoes, sonobuoys and unattended underwater sensors. Offered in a wide range of voltages, up to 1,000V, these batteries support an extremely long life cycle.
Hybrid Lithium Battery Concept
As underwater weapon systems are stored in sealed launching containers for years, the batteries inside them are required to maintain their state of charge for the same time period. While primary batteries do not have the sufficient power density required for a torpedo launch, or for a powerful acoustic pulse generated by a sonobuoy, rechargeable batteries may not survive long years without a recharge.
The traditional solution for such weapons, a thermal battery, has its disadvantages, such as high cost of development, single activation without shut down, and structural constraints. Epsilor has addressed this challenge by offering a smart and innovative battery solution: a hybrid battery that combines the advantages of primary and rechargeable batteries.
Epsilor’s hybrid batteries are based on a unique combination of high power Li-Ion cells that generate launch and boost power, together with primary Lithium cells that excel in low self-discharge rate, keeping the rechargeable cells in a sufficient state of charge for 5 to 15 years of storage.
Managed by Epsilor’s smart BMS, our Hybrid battery also offers monitoring features that enable training and reuse of the battery. Unlimited by the thermal battery’s cylindrical form factor, hybrid batteries can fit any volume, shape or form.
